I seriously just threw together a bundle.
I wanted to get it posted while the sale is still going on! I've been wanting to post it, but refining the last piece that will also be posted as a freebie.

This weekend when I can breathe --- this will be updated with the 6th file (Perimeter) and a handout! So be sure to watch for the update.

Performance Task for Algebra

The goal of the performance task is to provide a type of student assessment that goes beyond the evaluation of skills to truly asses understanding.

Climbing Mount Rushmore presents a scenario where the students need to use their knowledge of quadratic functions to determine whether they will have enough energy to throw a hook to a height of 18 feet.

Completely aligned with the Common Core Standards for High School Mathematics, this lesson also includes teacher notes with enduring understandings, two versions of varying difficulty with answer keys, and a standards based rubric.

FREE Worksheet: Cellular Respiration Word Game

Great review with a secret message!

This is a FREE download!  Click here to receive your free copy of this worksheet:

Cellular respiration is one of the hardest topics a biology teacher has to teach during their course.  Its very abstract nature makes it particularly hard for many students to comprehend.  In my experience, the best approach is to provide as many opportunities as possible for the students to review and work with the information.  To give my students some extra review on the vocabulary words used in this unit,  I wrote this short review worksheet.

It is a three page worksheet and the answer key is provided.  Here is a quick look at a couple of the pages:

On the left side of the worksheet, a definition is given.  The student must write the correct term in the spaces to the right.

The boxed in letters will spell out a secret message.  The students record these letters in the blanks at the end of the worksheet to reveal the hidden message.   WARNING:  Make sure you read the hidden message before you pass out this worksheet.  It involves the giving of extra credit points on the test!  This is such a hard concept for so many students that I am happy to offer them some extra credit points if they complete this review worksheet.

This is just one of several types of review I do for this topic.  I am happy to share this vocabulary worksheet with you.  I hope you find it useful.

Happy Teaching!!

What do you think about Enrichment?

Enrichment...ah a thought from the past...remember the days when we could enrich our students with multiple experiences that would engage and excite them everyday? Long before state standardized testing ruled the day, we used to believe in educating the whole child. One of my fondest memories was the year we had a summer enrichment program for at risk students where the theme was flight. We used this theme for math and reading activities, as well as exposing them to a hot-air balloon launch, sky divers at the school and a field trip to Dulles Airport to watch the planes take off. You know what was so exciting for them was going up and down the escalator (which we do not have in the small town of Fredericksburg, Va.).

Teaching with Poverty in Mind: What Being Poor Does to Kids' Brains and What Schools Can Do about ItStill, when you look at the research with children in poverty (especially Eric Jensen's book) you will note that one of the best models is exactly what we did 20 years ago...Enrichment. I happen to teach at a school like most of America that has about 30% low socio economic students mixed with 60% middle class and about 10% upper middle class. What we have found is that ALL students benefit from an Enrichment model.

Let me share with you a sneak peek into last week's Multicultural Day. When testing became such a demanding thorn in our side we used to have a Multicultural Night - where students could come and learn about cultures around the world. Guess who came? Mostly it was full of our middle/upper class students with a few from our lower economic population. So we were enriching the enriched. Does that make sense? Last year we decided to do it during the day in school. So that ALL kids could participate.

Come on over to my blog to learn more about how we engage the upper grades.

Do you give your students a plan when they investigate?

We have been experimenting with circuits and electromagnets in my class for weeks and I am finally ready for them to design their own investigation! But before I do that, I must first teach them how to plan.  You may want to use this planning sheet as a format for the students or yourself when teaching them about writing investigations up in their science notebooks.  You can have this guideline for FREE here....
