Tips to improve Professional Development Meetings

'Tis the season to sit in meetings, fa la la la la . . . .

The beginning of a new school year always means meetings . . . meet for this, meet for that, at times it seems like you have a meeting to say you had a meeting.  Through the years, I have had some interesting professional development meetings.  Yes, I know,  I may be in the minority of teachers who can say I have sat through some interesting professional development meetings.  To read more about this, hop over to my blog.

Fern Smith's Dollar Days Sale Items!

I am participating in the Lesson Cloud Authors' Dollar Days Sale!
My Top Ten Best Sellers and Two New Items will be $1 ~ That's Right ~ ONE DOLLAR!

Come on over and read my post!

The Amazing Pencil

It can be difficult to keep students engaged and learning during the first few days of school.  I like to "ease" students back into the school routine with fun, hands-on activities.  One activity my students especially enjoy is cooking!  I create reading passages that contain no-cook, no-heat recipes.  Students read the passage, follow the recipe to create a snack, and answer comprehension questions about the passage.  It's reading comprehension practice that my students truly enjoy!  One of the Recipes for Reading Comprehension passages that I created is perfect for back to school.  "The Amazing Pencil" contains fun facts about the history and usage of the pencil, along with a recipe for creating a cookie pencil snack.  Check it out in my Tpt store - only $1.00 every day!

So excited for Dollar Days!

I'm so excited about the Dollar Days sale.  I've already put a bunch of stuff into my cart.  Thanks Lesson Cloud Authors!  Here's what's on sale at my store for Dollar Days.  You can link to the products through the pictures.

I also just added my Readers Workshop and Writers Workshop Bulletin Board Packs to my store which I'm super excited about.  Check them out if you're in bulletin board mode like me.

Hope you find some great stuff this weekend and enjoy what's left of the summer!

Back to School Location Scavenger Hunt

At the start of each new school year, many teachers like to use a "Location Scavenger Hunt" to help students new to the school become familiar with the campus.  I like to place clues around the school at important places, such as the media center, cafeteria, computer lab, and other places.  Each clue gives students a hint as to the next location.  Students follow the clues until they collect them all.  In this way, students travel all around the school, becoming familiar with important areas.  I have developed a product, called "Spot the Puppy", that contains all the clues needed to set up your own "Location Scavenger Hunt" for your school.  During the Lesson Cloud Dollar Days, it is on sale at my Teachers Pay Teachers store for $2.00 - a 20% savings!
