Descriptive Writing, Point of View, and Poetry All in One!

a m smith innovative connections the lesson cloudI <3 animals, so what better way to get students writing descriptively than by composing poems from an amazing creature's point of view?
My 8th graders thoroughly enjoy creating these and presenting them!!
Keeping with the descriptive writing mode throughout poem, students write from the animal's point of view to show the animal's life, habitat, diet, facts, physical description, and lots more. For the visual appeal...and the fun part...I require poems to be presented in a creative visual display. Students get very creative with this part, too! Teach them to easily "SHOW" not "tell" when writing. This is a great way to incorporate science class too!
Descriptive Writing, Point of View, and Poetry All in One!

Robbed of our technology!

Dear Teachers,
I hope you all had a fabulous Thanksgiving holiday. I know everyone is geared up to get some great deals on the TpT sale today and other cyber Monday deals. However, as you are spending money on gifts and wonderful teaching materials, can you take a moment to share some of the wealth?

The last two weekends, my classroom has been broken into and robbed! My students are heartbroken because the thieves stole the student computers and our printer. I just can't believe that someone would steal from a school- and not once, but twice!! My students are English language learners, and we used the computers a lot.

I have submitted a project request on for new classroom computers for my students to use. If you have a little extra left over this winter after you finish your holiday shopping, please consider donating to my classroom or one of the other wonderful teachers requesting materials on

To read more about our story or to make a donation, please go to: Robbed of Our Technology! If you aren't in a position to give, please pin, facebook, or blog about this so that I can get the word out. I'd love for my kiddos to be able to come back from Christmas break to new computers!

Thanks for taking the time to read, and I wish you and your class Happy Holidays!
